Bending Atmospheres

A Journey from Inner to Outer Space

“Bold, daring, exciting adventures – fraught with danger befitting James Bond – are at the heart of this valuable contribution to the literature of how humans developed techniques, protocols, and different breathing gas mixtures for survival, working, and exploration in both the deep sea and space environment by one of the men directly involved in those developments.”

Bernie Chowdhury, author – of _The Last Dive: A Father and Son’s Fatal Decent into the Ocean’s Depths

“Bending Atmospheres A Journey from Inner to Outer Space is the fascinating life story of Glenn Butler and his deep commercial diving and mix gas research accomplishments. The cast of charters that Glenn worked with, the included technical information, and how technology developed for underwater gets used in the space program is an intriguing story. Very few people know this part of history. I could not put this riveting book down.”

Larry Cohen, Underwater Photographer, and
co-founder of the Underwater Photographic Society

“It takes a thoughtful mind and uniquely gifted spirit to put together this monumental book. Glenn is a colorful, experienced, talented and brave person. His life story was enriched by a few of the brightest minds in aquatic commercial, military, technical and medical industry. We are blessed to have Glenn’s book as a reference to a brighter future of ocean exploration.”

A Diver’s Must-Read
I met Glenn Butler in 1992 when I started my magazine SUBAQUA Journal. Glenn then introduced me to Dr. Bill Hamilton. To me, these were just a few incredible men who were at the top of their fields. But they were just like you and me. They were excited about new things in diving and keeping divers safer.

In 1995 I took over the hyperbaric chambers on City Island and it was Glenn who taught me everything about gas mixing, chamber operations, and oxygen safety. Little did I know he was the “lab rat” for everything that was done in mixed gas diving prior to that time. Bending Atmospheres is a chronicle of a life’s work that also made the lives of so many others richer in more ways than can be expressed. I am proud to call Glenn a friend and a colleague.

If you are in the diving world Bending Atmospheres is a MUST-READ book. If you are a technical diver, it is even more of a must-read. Everything we do today in advanced and technical diving is because of Glenn Butler, Dr. Bill Hamilton, Dave Kenyon, and Hans Schreiner. For Glenn to put this incredible story to print makes is all the more special.

An interesting tale of one man’s experiences
This is an engrossing story about discovery, adventure success and failure from the man who personally experienced the events. The way that the narrative is constructed from snippets from from the author’s past interwoven with more contemporary events is interesting and gives a window on his past as well as his work in the present. I recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in deep sea diving, space exploration and hypobaric therapies.

A Great Book about Mentorship
A unique trip through early Deepsea diving research and its relationship to Outer Space Exploration.

Great read
Bending atmospheres is an excellent guide to underwater and space exploration. While technical, it is written to artfully explain the intricies to those with little knowledge of the subject. Truly an education. Glen Butler is a fascinating man whose passion guided his life choices. It was most interesting to follow his life and understand those driving forces which led him on his quest. He is inspirational and personifies a can do approach to challenge.
Treat yourself to this uplifting experience.

Fascinating blend of personal and scientific growth.
There is a warmth to this book as it blends personal development from youth to mature adulthood. Along the way we are given a great insight into the world of pressure related issues faced both deep undersea and in space. We see the dangers and the rewards of scientific exploration and a fair bit humor.
Anyone with an interest in how the curious mind works will enjoy this book. I know that I did.
